Auxiliary Engine No.2 was started up after a few routine checks & overhauls.
On starting up, a knocking sound was heard. The A/E connecting rod bolts renewal was overdue by about 1000 hrs or so.
The 3rd Engineer was inspecting the A/E to trace the source of the knocking sound before shutting down. However within seconds the A/E made a loud sound and the No. 2 unit piston and connecting rod came crashing out of the engine casing door, greatly damaging the entablature also.
The e/case pin of the particular unit was also found to be greatly scored.
