FINGERS CAUGHT IN MACHINERY
30th Aug. 04
This incident involves personal injury due to sheer ignorance of how certain machinery works.
During morning rounds, Electrical Officer noticed 2 of the 3 drive bolts of refrigeration machinery had worked loose, fallen down and compressor on stop position. He removed the guard from its place, installed one belt and while installing the second belt the compressor started up as it was on auto mode.
All his right hand fingers were crushed between the pulley and the drive belt. He was taken to hospital immediately.
The man was not aware of the fact that the compressor if on auto-mode may start anytime when suction pressure reaches a certain pre-set value.
