As a 5th Engineer working on a tanker I noticed that during my watch one of the crankcase doors felt overtly hot.
I immediately informed the 2nd Engineer who in turn called the Chief Engineer down to the Engine Room.
Soon the rpm started fluctuating rapidly; subsequently all the crankcase relief doors lifted and the Engine room was completely filled with smoke.
The cause of the crankcase explosion was found to be defective Luboil supply to the main bearing.
