STIFFNER CRACK IN THE BALLAST TANK LEADING TO FLOODING OF ENGINE ROOM :

(A PRASANNAVATHANAM, 2/E)

Ship was a bulk carrier. When taking round of E/R, found bilge water level high. Bilge alarm was not working. Pumped out the water through the OWS, but after 1 hr found the level further increasing. On inspection found the water coming from the fwd bulkhead of the engine room.Suspected the ballast tank forward of ER is cracked and the water leaking into ER, the tank was deballasted and gas freed.

C/E, Chief officer, Master, fitter, AB – all went into the tank and found one of the stiffners cracked and the water leaking to ER. Same welded by using a triangular stress plate temporarily. The hydraulic test was done by filling the water, found satisfactory, the ship proceeded to the designated port.
