MUD AND SLUDGE IN THE DIESEL TANK AND IN THE PIPE LINE LEADING TO BLACK OUT :

Vessel was a bulk carrier, proceeding to Auckland from Wellington.Sea was very rough.Around 0930 hrs, black out took place and main engine stopped. Standby generator started and taken on load, after few minutes, this also tripped.

On inspecting the filters in the fuel line, the filter before booster pump, found dry. Opened up the main line filter and found full of sludge and mud. The tank was drained for sludge and mud, the filter was cleaned, the pipe line was removed and cleared off mud and sludge, the line boxed back. The auxiliary engine started after priming the fuel pumps and lines. Satisfactory.


The generator was taken on load and main engine was started and the vessel proceeded on her voyage.

Lesson learnt
:
before starting the voyage, it is adivised that the fuel filters can be kept clean, the fuel tanks drained for sludge and water.
