Electrical officer wanted to replace the defective sensor on the fuel oil line system for Main Engine. He assumed that there will be a pocket and that he can take out the sensor element. He did not consult any watchkeeping engineer or 2/E. On slackening , the oil at high pressure and at a temperature of 120°C splashed onto his eyes and body. He got burn injuries and had to be admitted in the hospital.
The lesson learnt :
1.Do not assume.
2.Before doing any work on a working machinery, consult the watch-keeping engineer, to isolate the equipment.
3.Refer the manuals regarding the construction and assembly of the unit.
