Around midnight running generator tripped on low lub-oil pressure. No external cause could be identified during preliminary inspection. Upon inspecting the crankcase white metal could be seen squeezing out from indicating big failure.
A crack was found on the crankcase of #5 unit and while trying to twin the engine it was realized that the crankshaft had actually broken into two pieces at the crack.
An enquiry was conducted but could not reach any specific conclusion. All the engine working parameters were normal and performance satisfactory. But in the previous month water leakage was detected from the turbo charger casing and was temporarily repaired. Even though shock loading of the units with water engines was suspected, the final inspection report attributed the incident to crankshaft material failure.
