EMERGENCY AIR COMPRESSOR NOT BUILDING UP PRESSURE :

(PROBLEM OCCURRED DURING TAKE OVER FROM GREEKS)

The vessel was a tanker. It was taken over from Greeks. The old master and chief engineer were retained to make one parallel voyage. The crew change took place at Gibralter. All personnel yet to get familiarized with the vessel. While assuming charges, it was observed, boiler low water level alarm came, but by the time the line could be traced and tried to change over to manual mode, the ‘low, low’ level alarm came and boiler tripped off.

The auxiliary engines were running on HO and when tried to change over to DO, they also tripped off. Emergency generator started and came on load. The HO was drained from the fuel system of generators, and when tried to start, the air bottle pressure was low due to leakages.

Emergency air compressor was tried out, but it was not building up enough pressure.Luckily the ship had N2 cylinders, and with the help of nitrogen, one generator was started and taken on load and ship’s equipments were restored one by one.
