ENGINE FAILS TO START ON FUEL DUE TO WATER IN SCAVENGE SPACE :
This incident happened on one of my vessel while trying out the engine prior departure port.
2/E blew through engine on air but the engine when tried on fuel, engine was not firing on fuel. Normal checks carried out. External checks did not reveal anything. The oiler as a routine, prior departure, he used to lubricate the liner by turning the cylinder lubricator manually and also he used to drain the scavenge spaces. The oiler reported to 2/E, that he found water coming from units 5 and 6. To our surprise the scavenge space of unit 5 was full of jacket water due to liner ‘o’ring leakage. Topping up of the expansion tank was done by greaser and engineer on watch was not aware of it.
Scavenge space drained and the engine was started and found normal. The leakage was very less and the temperature was also very less. Assuming that the leakage may subside once the temperature reaches normal, the ship sailed out. Infact the leakage did stop after full away was given, meanwhile we were draining the scavenge spaces.
Lesson learnt :-
The proper heating of the engine and the scavenge space to be drained prior trying out engine.-
