The Duration of the course is 6 months. On successful completion of this course, the candidates will be eligible to join in Indian/Foreign Shipping companies as a Deck/Engine crew. With further sea service, they would be promoted as Motorman/Oil man, Fitter, Deck serang, Able-Bodied Seamen, Bosun. They can also be promoted to officer level with certain service and qualification requirements on passing the examinations conducted by DGS.
 
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should have Passed 10th standard from a recognized educational board with Science and Mathematics as subjects. The marks obtained should be 40% in overall and 40 % in English language alone.
   
Should qualify a Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the Board of Examination for Seafarers (BES) for admission with effect from January 2012 Batch. The written test comprises of questionnaire from English, Mathematics and Science in three sections. The Maximum marks would be 50 and a candidate need to obtain 40 % marks in each section. A Physical Endurance test would also be conducted to ascertain the physical standard of the candidate.  On successful completion of the above the candidates need to indicate three choices of Institutes for admission in to the course, wherein candidate seeking admission at HIMT could indicate the same as their 1st choice.
   
Age Limit
  Not more than 25 years at the time of commencement of the course.
   
Medical Standards
  Medically fit as per the standards set by M. S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000. They should have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and should be free from colour blindness
   
 
 
Deck Rating
They are responsible for safe navigation, cargo handling and allied duties. These ratings are employed in the deck department of the ship and are normally called “Seaman”. They undertake the routine maintenance of the vessel including chipping, painting, greasing, repairs to the ship’s hull, and superstructure. They are trained to operate the deck machinery like cranes, derricks and also undertake the steering of the vessel at sea, are employed as lookouts on the bridge under the officer on duty.  A competent person can aspire to become the Master (Captain) of a merchant ship after required seatime and passing various exams.
 
Engine Rating
They are responsible for the operation and maintenance of engineering and electrical equipments on board.  These ratings are employed in the engine room for routine maintenance, upkeep of the different machineries, boilers pumps, etc., They basically assist the engineers in the routine functioning of the engine room.  At sea, they keep a record and monitor the running of the machinery an assist the engineer officer on duty.  A competent person can rise to the level of Chief Engineer of a merchant ship after required sea time and passing various exams.
